Join us for a reading and discussion group that introduces school-aged readers to different subjects and genres each month. Through read-alouds, first chapter book tastings, and group discussion and play, we’ll help young readers find their next favorite book. Grades 1-5. Freckle Juice by Judy Blume
All Andrew wants is freckles, so when one of his classmates sells him a recipe for freckles, he thinks he has found the perfect solution. With short chapters and illustrations throughout, young readers will enjoy this humorous story while building confidence in their reading skills.
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
Roz the robot accidentally washes ashore on wild terrain. Coming to life far from where she was meant to. She- with some bumps along the way- adapts to life in the wild, becoming the eponymous wild robot. The Wild Robot was recently adapted into an award-winning movie so you can read and then watch with your young reader!
Wondrous Rex by Patricia MacLachlan
Lily needs help with her writing. In comes Rex, a golden retriever who knows how to inspire. Young readers will connect with the bond between Lily and her Aunt Grace and delight in the magic that Rex brings to their lives.
Ways to Make Sunshine by Renee Watson
No matter what life throws at Ryan, she knows how to make the most of a difficult situation. When a series of big life events hits, Ryan’s ability to see the best in everything is tested. This book is not only fun and heartfelt but a good and age-appropriate opener to conversations about managing big changes.
Stuart Little by E.B. White
This classic chapter book follows Stuart, a mouse in a family of humans who loves adventure. When his friend goes missing, Stuart goes on his biggest adventure. Stuart Little was also adapted into a movie, making it another option to read, then watch the adaptation with your young reader!
