Who WE Are: Karen Yuko

These blog posts give our community a chance to better know their friendly Willoughby-Eastlake Library employees.

Meet Karen Yuko, Administrative Assistant for the Fiscal Officer!

Why do you love libraries? What is your earliest library memory?
Sadly, my mom worked nights and wasn’t the library going type. I really didn’t start going to the library until I was an adolescent, and then it was only for school research. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I started to enjoy reading, and not until my 1st position with WEPL (part-time Willowick Circulation Clerk) that I became a voracious reader. Working at a library was for me like being “a kid in a candy store!” All these chances to immerse myself in a book were right at my fingertips! Working for the Library in any capacity is a GREAT job!

What do you like to do in your free time?
I am an avid baker and crafter. I am known by many for my Christmas cookies that I package each year and give as gifts to friends & loved ones. Check out A Taste of Home’s Christmas Cookies! (Editor’s note: The days when Karen brings cookies in to work are the BEST days!)

What is your favorite quote, passage, or piece of advice, and where did you read or receive it?
Believe it or not, my favorite quote is from the New Testament of the Bible, from Luke 6:31 “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” I have heard it my whole life and it never gets old!

What is a library “hidden treasure” that you want patrons to know about or know more about?
This service is not really hidden, but I’ve come across people recently who were unaware that two of our Libraries (Willoughby & Willowick) offer Passport & Photo service. This is a great service we offer to current & future patrons! And just think, once they apply for their passports, they can then search the library to their hearts’ content looking at travel books & DVDs and begin to plan their current & future trips!

What are you currently reading?
I just finished reading James Patterson & Mike Lupica’s The House of Wolves. As all of Patterson’s books, it is a fast-paced read. I was particularly taken with the main character, Jenny Wolf. I fell in love with her & want to be her when I grow up! She is a role model for what a strong & confident woman should be!
