Yes, I’m on My Phone Again..READING!
You’re on your phone too much. Have you heard that from someone or from the little voice in your head? I would like to make a point: we shouldn’t judge phone usage by time alone. We need to distinguish between our mindless social media scrolling and our enrichment that comes from using the phone to READ. Our children are watching us. Do they realize you are reading a book on your phone?
Book families raise readers. A library patron told me about a book he is reading with his child, and how much he is enjoying the book himself. I thought, “now there’s a Book Family”. If you had family members who read to you as a child, you are a member of a Book Family. If you grew up seeing family members immersed in a book, you are a member of a Book Family. Make sure your children notice you reading. With a print book in your hands, it is obvious. With a Kindle or Kobo eReader, other people likely know you are reading a book. With a tablet or phone, not so much. And audiobooks are pretty invisible to others, since those earbuds you are wearing could mean music or podcast.
New parents may find the phone to be the handiest way to get some books read (here’s a Book Riot article). Willoughby-Eastlake Library works to make reading on a device EASY and FREE for you. Have you tried using the hoopla app or getting OverDrive eBooks using Libby? Lots of books and audiobooks and more being added daily. We monitor our eBook/eAudio collections to be sure you don’t have to wait too long for your hold to drop in. We even have reference eBooks in our Gale Virtual Reference Library.
We love to hear about our Book Family patrons. No matter how you get your books, digital on a phone, tablet or computer, or a print book in your hands, read with your children and let them know YOU ARE READING BOOKS.
